Hip and Knee Surgeon

Doctor Rafael Llopis

Rafael Llopis is a leading prosthetic hip and knee surgeon nationally and internationally.

As a pioneer in the development of new, minimally invasive techniques and in the use of biomaterials that facilitate bone growth, prevent allergies and delay wear, his interventions achieve the restoration of patient mobility.

Dr Llopis is the director of the Hip and Knee Institute of the San Francisco de Asís Hospital in Madrid, and Head of Traumatology at the Santa Cristina Hospital in Madrid. His specialisation in the latest advances in hip and knee surgery have turned him into a reference in this field.

Rafael Llopis operates preserving as much of the hip or knee bone as possible, and, in the case of younger patients, replacing the joint surface using a technique called «Resurfacing». He also performs surgery on both hips or knees during the same operation whenever the situation allows.

His training, knowledge and experience allow him to use a minimally invasive technique, which reduces bleeding and the need for blood transfusions.

Rafael Llopis is a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, and a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery as well as Traumatology and Functional and Clinical Anatomy. He was the first Spanish member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), among other organisations. He gained experience and broadened his training in the United States, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom, and is a regular contributor to scientific journals and a speaker at numerous international forums.
